In a pure (undoped) semiconductor the number density n or p of charge carriers per unit volume is far smaller than in a metal. For example, in pure Ge at room temperature, n ≈ p ≈ 1018 m-3, whereas in a typical metal, n ≈ 1028 m-3. This results in a much larger conductivity in a metal than in a semiconductor.
