Currently, there are three main paradigms for data storage (Figure 1.2): i) Optical, ii) Magnetic (HDD & Tape), and iii) Solid-State (e.g. Flash). Their feature sizes are already close to the physical limits of scaling and further improvement in storage density can be achieved only through 3D integration.
